The National Children's Bureau (NCB) has published Young Children and Racial Justice: Taking action for racial equality in the early years, a new book by racial equality advocate, Jane Lane.
Jane Lane's book aims to understand what racism is so its influence within the early years can continue to be countered. Addressing topics such as fairness and equality for those growing up in a global society, it provides a professional framework for best practice amongst people who work with, care for, and educate young children.
Through multiple case studies, references and articles, Lane explores all aspects of racism and its impact on children, allowing the readers to better understand current government legislation, plan national and local policies and put them into practice. The text covers key issues such as skin colour, terminology, name-calling, training, working within all-white areas, and dealing with racist incidents.
"This is possibly the most comprehensive guide to racial equality in early years in the UK," said Haki Kapasi, Director of Inspire Consultancy. "It will be an invaluable resource for everyone in the sector - from policy makers to practitioners and trainers."
Lord Herman Ouseley, former chief executive of the Commission for Racial Equality and author of the book's foreword said, "It is in parts most challenging, always interesting, and above all thoroughly informative. There is lot of learning (and unlearning) to do."
